CAMP EQUIPMENT:

All Camp and bivouac equipment has to be chosen according to the climatic conditions. Extreme cold, strong winds as well as the necessity to melt snow and ice daily are the crucial factors. Yet everything has to be small and light enough to be carried along.
Choosing the right sleeping bag is obviously very important. In the climate chamber of our sponsor Vaude we tested a number sleeping bags during several nights at –25°C. After a couple of frosty attempts we decided to use a prototype of Vaude's new expedition down sleeping bag in Greenland. This one allows us to sleep very comfortable even at -35°C as the measurements showed.
A thin vapor barrier liner will ensure that the sleeping bag will stay completely dry. This is very important during arctic expeditions, since there will never be an opportumity to dry it.
In the Arctic white gas or kerosene (paraffin) offer the best heat output. We will use two MSR XGK Expedition Stoves, that we will run with white gas. To prevent the stoves from sinking into the snow we built a solid stand.
Not only to reduce the cooking times but also for safety reasons we will take two stoves along. As all water has to be melted from snow and ice the stoves are of vital importance.
For expedition planners and who else is interested we provide our equipment plan as pdf-download.
